With three evenly matched teams chock-full of players, the Cook County Little League season is off to a great start, said Youth Baseball Commissioner Rob Hackett.

The first game of the season was played June 1 and the Cubs beat the Twins 15-10 in an action packed game.

On June 8 the Cubs lost to the Dodgers 15-4 and on June 10 the Cubs once again beat the Twins 11-6.

The most exciting game of the young season occurred on June 17 when the Dodgers slipped by the Cubs 3-2 in extra innings. “That was a great, great game,” said Hackett.

The Twins traveled to Silver Bay on June 17 to play a double header, losing both games 7-0 and 14-6, but gaining a lot of experience in the process.

“I’m really excited about this year. We have several high school players volunteering to help with the Little League teams, and that’s encouraging.

“We also have Colin Everson coaching junior league [Babe Ruth] players. They practice every day and get 13-15 kids on the field for practice. The team receives some sponsorship money from the Minnesota Twins.

“Arleigh Jorgenson is my go-to guy when I have any questions. I grew up in Silver Bay and Dick Lynch was the driving force behind sports there. He was a great baseball man. Arleigh and Dick were cut from the same cloth. It’s great that he’s here and such a great resource for me and the younger players,” Hackett said

“Interest is really up this year. All of the ball clubs have performed really well.

Competition is excelling on the field and the teams are stacked with a lot of talented ball players,” said Hackett.

“There are a lot of first year kids that haven’t played before. I love their enthusiasm and excitement. For me, I personally get a lot from those kids.”

Aside from commissioner duties, Hackett is coaching a T-Ball team and a junior league team. “T-Ball is so much fun. The kids are great and their parents and fans are really into the games,” said Hackett.
