Suellen S. Kruse, age 82, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2023, in Grosse Pointe, MI. She was born in Minneapolis on July 28, 1940, to Gordon and Evelyn Kruse. She grew up in the cities and was a graduate of Southwest High School in Minneapolis. She worked as a Trust Officer at First National Bank of Minneapolis before she and Jeanne Schlosser moved to Grand Marais, MN in 1989 and opened the Kah-Nee-Tah Gallery and Cottages in Lutsen. Suellen had a passion for art and her beloved Lake Superior, and she combined those loves into her business which she owned until 2014.
Suellen loved her Grand Marais community and contributed to it in several ways. As leader of the Johnson Heritage Post in the early days, she was instrumental in creating growth, stability and new directions for the gallery. Suellen was involved with the Harbor Park transformation. She worked with her community of faith, First Congregational Church, as a catalyst for its stained-glass memorial window and she served as the President of the North Shore Health Care Foundation. As an author, Suellen, with her sister, wrote and published a cookbook featuring recipes from their mother.
As involved as she was in her community and business, she always took time to “smell the roses” and remember what was important: her home on the lake, her family and her beloved pets too numerous to name. She moved to Grosse Pointe to live near her sister in 2017 who cared for her until her death. She is survived by her sister, Priscilla van Horne, a niece, Jen Andrews van Horne and her extended family, Annie O’Toole, Leo Stewart, Kate Andrews van Horne, Lillian Tan, James, Mary, Rachel and Ryan Tandias, as well as many friends considered family of choice. Her memorial service will be held July 8, 2023, at 12 noon at Grosse Pointe United Methodist Church, 211 Moross, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, North Shore Health Care Foundation or Grosse Pointe United Methodist Church.
