The Cook County High School girls pushed their record to 3-2 on the year with a 13-5 victory over the Cromwell Cardinals on Friday, April 17.
Playing away, Maddy Roy went the entire seven innings on the mound, striking out 5 Cromwell batters while Alyssa Spry took Maddy’s place at the catcher’s position and performed admirably.
“Alyssa did a good job catching for us. She even threw a base runner out,” said Head Coach Jessie Anderson.
While every Viking got at least one hit, Carrie Palmer went 2-4 with a double and three runs batted in [RBIs] to lead the Vikings from the batter’s box. Bethany Derscheid also went 2-4 to have a strong day at the plate, said Anderson.
“We played okay on defense,” Anderson said. “We had a couple of balls go over our head and a couple of balls drop in just in front of us, but overall we had a fairly good defensive game.”
Viking base runners also had a few miscues. “Two runners got called out for leaving early and one runner didn’t slide into third and was out. These are things we will learn from. We had a big enough lead so it didn’t matter in this game, but our competition only gets tougher from here on out,” Anderson said.
Next up for the Vikings is Two Harbors on April 23, then they travel to Silver Bay on the 27th before coming home again on April 28 to face Barnum at 4 p.m. at the Cook County baseball field.
“We still have girls competing for positions,” Anderson said. “That means everybody is still getting playing time until players step up and take these open spots. Overall we’re getting better, but we need to continue to improve because the competition is also getting better.”
