The annual Cook County Middle School National Geographic Geography Bee was held at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts on Jan. 8. Ten students advanced to the district competition after winning the classroom rounds held in December. They took to the stage at the ACA in front of their peers, answering challenging geography questions from around the globe.

Competing were eighth-graders Santina McMillan, Ezra Lunde, Jamie Johnson; seventh-graders Cody Leck, Alyssa Fenstad- Lashinski, Ethan Sporn, Jack Peck; and sixth-graders Trent Spry and Adam Dorr.

Students were asked questions about national landmarks, physical geography, cultural geography, and were required to answer questions from a map of freshwater withdrawals by state. Sixth-grader Adam Dorr won the final championship round by successfully answering two questions out of three against seventh grader Alyssa Fenstad- Lashinski. Dorr knew that the Taklimakan Desert, home of the Uyghur people, is in China.

Dorr won $15, courtesy of the sponsors of Geography Bee, Cook County Schools PTA. Fenstad-Lashinski won $10 and in 3rd place, Jack Peck won $5.

Dorr now takes another test to see if he advances to the state competition in St. Cloud in April.
