Softball players from four different Cook County teams joined together to play in the 37th annual Finland Fireman’s Wooden Bat Tournament held July 16-18 at Gregg Field.

Called the Stu Warriors, the team from Cook County took fourth place in a large competitive field of teams that came from all over the region.

“It was a great weekend of fun softball,” said Rob Hackett.

Proceeds raised from the weekend help fund the Finland Volunteer Fire and Rescue squads which serve the greater Finland Minnesota area.

Hackett explained that the Stu Warriors is a tribute name “for our fallen teammates that are family and lifelong friends who have been a part of this team. The players honored fallen teammates Steven Roy and Thomas Spah, “As we navigate without them.”

But why is everyone in the picture pointing up?

Hackett laughed and said, “The reason we are pointing is because Steven Roy or as we called him Stewie would randomly point somewhere if he saw someone taking a picture of him. We don’t know why but there are so many pictures of him pointing up we do it in honor of him.”
