A host of current and former log rolling champions will compete this weekend at the Fisherman’s Picnic Lumberjack Camp.
Competition for the professional lumberjacks (sawing and chopping) starts at 1 p.m. and the log rolling starts at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The events are held on Wisconsin Street next to The Pie Place.
Local favorite Jessica Berg-Collman, age 16, will make her professional debut in front of friends and family this weekend, so come out and cheer for her.
Five world champions will compete on Friday, including both the current men’s champion and holder of six world titles, Darron Hudson of Novia Scotia, and the current women’s world champion, Shana Martin of Madison, Wisconsin who holds four log rolling world championships and two boom running world championships.
Also attending are former five-time world log rolling champions Brian Duffy, Hayward, Wisconsin; Taylor Bisor of Hayward, who holds a world championship title in both log rolling and boom running; and Jenny Atkinson, five time log rolling champion and three-time boom running world champion.
The North Shore Rollers Team Log Rolling tournament starts at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and the kids come back to compete at 11 a.m. on Saturday to vie for bragging rights in the Minnesota State Championship Log Rolling Tournament. Current U10 world champion Lucy Shaw of Grand Marais (and Texas) and seven or eight other local kids will lay it all on the line in this event.
On Sunday professional boom runners will head up to Clearwater Lake and compete on Niel and Jenny Atkinson’s pond in the longest boom running venue in the world. All are invited to come and watch and cheer for these great pros.
