Straw for the 2020 John Beargrease sled dog race stolen

“Someone backed up into a Cook, Minnesota farmer’s field and made off with 200 bales of straw,” said Frank Moe, one of the board of directors (and a contestant) of the 2020 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.

“The farmer was selling the straw to us at cost,” Frank said.

Mushers put straw on the ground for bedding so their sled dogs can rest and keep warm at checkpoints, he added.

The Beargrease organizers were notified of the theft on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

It is estimated that it will cost $2,000 to replace the straw. Moe said that an anonymous donor immediately came forward with a $2,000 gift to Beargrease. Other contributions and gifts have been made as well.

“Nate and Jeff at Cook County Home Center said they would deliver 50-60 bales of straw to Trail Center. Since this happened, donations to the Beargrease are going through the roof. The outpouring of support from the local community here has been tremendous.”If you would like to help, visit the Donation page on beargrease.com.
