Storytellers and Northwoods scenes at Cross River Heritage Center

Storytelling will be the focus of a special event at the Cross River Heritage Center in Schroeder at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8.

Nancy Gunderson Lindquist, Sharon (Pete) Ankrum, Shirley Smith Pecore and Sandy Smith Solmonson will share their stories of growing up in Schroeder in the 1940s and beyond. Nancy and Sandy had parents who kept them busy with projects like operating “The Eat Shop” next to the Cross River in Schroeder. In a previous life, the eight-foot square building served as oil shed for Ellis Smith’s gas station. Sandy’s dad was Ellis Smith, son of Schroeder patriarch W.C. Smith and proprietor of the circa 1925 Cross River Falls Hotel.

Come hear entertaining memories, such as those of Sandy about the Eat Shop: “We had a table and a door and when it rained we’d chew gum and stick it in the holes in the roof because it would leak. We didn’t have a drain so we’d just dump the coffee grounds and everything down this hole in the floor.”
