The cold and wind didn’t stop the North Shore Storm boys’ cross country team from running away with the Polar League title in the meet held Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Pincushion.
Taking the combined team of Cook County and Two Harbors top five runners’ places, the Storm finished with 37 points, easily outdistancing Esko, who had 66. Teams finishing third through seventh were Moose Lake, 69; Cromwell-Wright, 77; Wrenshall 98; South Ridge, 166; and McGregor 202.
Will Surbaugh led the team with a second place finish, running the 5k (3.1 miles) distance in 17:53. Isaac Swanson was third in 17:56, Noah Smith placed 5th in 18:04, Brenden Seipke was 7th in 18:40 and JC Holman was the Vikings’ 5th runner with a 20th place finish and a clocking of 20:16. The Storm’s sixth and seventh varsity runners were Tate Crawford, who placed 26 in 20:23 and Kevin Viren, who placed 27th in 20:36.
Varsity girls place third
The varsity girls’ race featured three teams who were closely matched. In the end, South Ridge High School took the conference crown with a low score of 41 points. Moose Lake was second with 44 points, and the Vikings placed third with 51 points. Wrenshall, 92, and Esko, 134, were the only other schools to field full teams.
Autumn Smith led the Storm with a fourth-place finish with a time of 22:11.
Lamar Gordon finished in 8th place with a time of 22:31. Kate Walsberg was the third Storm runner in with an 11th-place finish and a time of 23:18. Malin Anderson placed 12th in 23:25 and Louise Ramberg was the Storm’s 5th runner with a 16th-place finish and time of 23:46. Abbie Crawford placed 24th with a time of 25:39.
JV boys
The Storm’s junior varsity boys’ team put in a strong performance at the Polar League meet, taking the crown with 29 points.
Tanner DeBoer placed second with a time of 20:22. Right behind Tanner was Henry Dearruda-Weaver in third place with a time of 20:40. Chance Hanel placed fourth with a time of 21:36. Keegan Morrison placed tenth in 22:20 and Jonah Schmidt finished 14th in 22:53.
The Storm’s next three runners were Trent Spry, 20th in 23:44; Hayden Johnson, 28th in 26:26; and Riley Tarver, who finished 32 in 29:29.
JV girls win
If the JV boys were good, the girls were just a little better, taking the junior varsity race with 27 points.
Isabel Schottenbauer captured first place in the girls’ JV race with a time of 23:52. Laura Erickson placed third in 24:22; Brooklyn Smith finished sixth in 25:23; Anna Hay placed eighth in 25:32; and Emily Seipke was the fifth runner in with a 9th-place finish and time of 25:39.
Placing 16th, 17th and 18th were Cecelia Chmelik, 27:18; Payton Dobin, 27:18.5, and Sidni Hendren, 27:55.
Middle school boys
Ian Thorpe placed fourth in the middle school, 3,200 meters (2 miles) run with a time of 10:18. Gus Han placed 15th in 11:35, Tristen Surbaugh finished 17th in 11:39, Silas Brandt placed 20th in 11:49, Haydon Taylor placed 26th in 13:30 and Reed Cruikshank placed 28th 20:29.
Middle school girls
The Storm only had three middle school girls run, but all of them did a great job. Jocelyn Carr placed 8th. She crossed the line in 11:45.
The next Storm runners were Lizzy Dover, 13th in 13:00; and Kylie Viren placed 16th in 13:36.
