With only five votes separating them, Bruce Martinson decided to pay for a recount in the off chance he would gain enough votes to win the district 5 Cook County commissioner’s seat held by incumbent Ginny Storlie.
The recount was held in the Cook County courthouse on Thursday, November 15 under the supervision of Cook County Auditor/ Treasurer Braidy Powers. Powers’ staff performed the manual recount with Martinson looking on and a friend of Storlie’s keeping tabs on the action for Storlie.
Following the November 6 election Storlie led Martinson 322 to 317.
When Powers and his crew were finished counting Cook County Commissioner Board chair Ginny Storlie kept her five-vote lead over Bruce Martinson 322 to 317.
This is the second narrow victory for Storlie over Martinson. Four years ago she beat him by eight votes.
In other election matters, Pete Gresczyk has decided not to accept a position he won in the Nov. 6 election.
Gresczyk beat Jonathan Steckelberg in a race for a two-year seat on the Grand Marais City Council, but after the election concerns were raised because Gresczyk’s G&G septic business hauls sludge from the city’s sewer plant.
Initially, there was some concern that because the city has a contract with Gresczyk, he might not be able to take the position. However, it was decided that when the bills are paid to G&G Pete would have to recuse himself. After some deliberation Gresczyk decided it would be best if he stepped back and give his seat up to avoid any potential conflict of interest.
