When our family moved to the area 15 years ago, moose and moose tracks were commonly seen but due to disease, pests, predators and hunting, seeing a moose is now rare.
For tourists, seeing a moose is big.
We are regularly asked, “Where is a good place to see moose?”
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) continues to allow moose hunting though they admit that the population is spiraling down. They tell us that there are plenty of moose left in Northeastern MN. But the few that are left, I believe, are in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and other remote areas. Those that are killed by hunters are those few that might be seen by tourists.
I have hunted most of my life. We are not antihunting. Our family enjoys seeing moose and our tourist-based economy can use more moose. Let’s end the moose hunting to give the moose population a chance to recover.
