There is one fish in Cook County that didn’t—and won’t—get away.

Local artist Betsy Bowen spent her Fourth of July weekend painting this lake trout onto the very large propane tank at Como Oil & Propane in Grand Marais. Funds for the project came from the Moving Matters “Great Place Race,” which distributed a total of $11,930 for 15 projects.

Not all of the projects are completed, but so far seating and plantings have made a nice addition to the WTIP radio station. A wheelchair accessible picnic table has been installed at Father Baraga Cross in Schroeder. New benches have been added at the Cook County Whole Foods Co-op, the Cook County High School tennis courts and at the Grand Marais Art Colony. Two white pine benches with plantings have been put along the South Gunflint Road so people can sit and rest and view the scenery.

Funds were also allocated so the new mural on Johnson’s Grocery store could be mounted onto the wall.

The Great Place Race was set up as a friendly, local competition for mini-grants to use high impact, low cost ideas to create great places in the local community. The ideas are to encourage people to slow down, stop and reflect, rest and gather themselves and move on more refreshed.

The Great Race Place is sponsored by the Moving Matters project, with funding from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Minnesota’s Prevention which is working to create safer and more accessible places to walk and bike in Cook County.
