Still time to vote in the District 1 Cook County commissioner special election

If you haven’t mailed in your ballot for the District 1 Cook County commissioner race, you still have time to go to the courthouse and vote, said Cook County Auditor/ Treasurer Braidy Powers.

But not much time.

The special election will close at 7:59 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6, and Powers said that if you have a proper I.D., or bring someone who can vouch for you, you could vote right up to the last minute.

The special election is being held to fill the seat vacated by Frank Moe who left due to concerns about his health with two years remaining. James (Jim) Vannet and Robert (Bobby) Deschampe received the most votes in a four-person primary, but the vote was close, with Vannet taking 116 votes to Deschampe’s 109; Ryan Bottger picked up 88 votes, and Dave Keller received 34 votes in the primary.

All told 347 votes were cast in the primary, but Powers said there are more than 600 voters in the district.

To vote at this late date, Powers said you need to come to the courthouse to register and bring a driver’s license or photo I.D., and a utility bill for the last 30 days to prove your place of residence. Short of those pieces of identification, Powers said, “You can also bring someone who can vouch for who you are and where you live, and they can sign a voucher for you so you can vote.”
