So far there has been little interest in people signing up to run for one of the three open city councilor positions or the mayor’s job.
On Wednesday, August 8, only current city councilor Jonathan Steckelberg and current mayor Jay Arrowsmith-DeCoux had paid their $2 filing fee and filled out their forms for the upcoming November 6 election.
Candidates have until Tuesday, August 14 to go to City Hall and sign up. The filing period ends at 5 p.m.
It’s not known at this time whether incumbents Anton Moody or Kelly Swearingen will seek reelection for their councilor posts.
If re-elected, Arowsmith- DeCoux will serve a third two-year term.
Two years ago MPR did a story about the difficulty many small towns in Minnesota were having in finding people who wanted to fill open elected positions. Arrowsmith-DeCoux was quoted in that story because he was camping and had forgotten to make it to City Hall in time to sign up for re-election. He said he was relieved that no one else had signed up and he won in a write-in campaign.
This year Jay got his paperwork in on time and it looks like he will have no one to run against.
