Stephan Hoglund of Grand Marais was awarded an honorable mention in the People – Children category in the 2011 International Photography Awards (IPA) contest sponsored by the Lucie Foundation of Los Angeles, California.
Hoglund said of his winning entry, Forest Edge: “The little girl is Elizabeth Bently Daughter. They used to live here and I did this as a family/kid photo shoot.
“I saw her walk away from mom and dad, and saw this rather crazy deep dark foreboding scene being established and I said, ‘Just let her go and see what she does.’ She walked down the road and then all of a sudden she must have felt the dark woods start closing in on her, and she turned around with this priceless look on her face.”
Over 8,000 submissions from 90 countries were received for the 2011 International Photography Awards with over 70 jurors, the largest to date. The foundation’s mission is to honor master photographers, discover new and emerging talent, and promote the appreciation of photography.
