As 2014 came to a close, artist Stephan Hoglund of Stephan Hoglund Jewelry Design announced that after 35 years of operating a retail business in Grand Marais, he is closing the doors of his business. Although Hoglund will no longer be working in the elegant shop and gallery on Wisconsin Street between the GunFlint Tavern and Joynes Ben Franklin, he will be available by appointment for those seeking his custom jewelry pieces.
“I have made this decision to further pursue my art jewelry and commercial and portrait photography without the worries and burdens of a retail responsibility. I will focus more on new ventures and deeper creation including spending part of the year in our home and studio in Marfa, Texas,” said Hoglund, adding, “I will always call Grand Marais home and will at this point spend most of my time here.”
Hoglund will still be offering the services he has become well-known for, his stylish jewelry work and his beautifully personalized photography, by appointment in Grand Marais, as a “drop-in studio” visitor at Betsy Bowen Studio in Grand Marais.
Hoglund declined to tell the News-Herald who would be purchasing his former retail space but simply said, “The new owner will be introduced after the first week of the New Year. I can say I could not be happier with the person who will be taking over the reins here, continuing to run Artists Loft and his own future ventures on site, as he seems excited and wants to keep a similar vibe on the property which has been a meeting place for local characters, artists, musicians, actors, hippies, oldsters and political weirdos and dissidents for decades!”
Hoglund thanked the community for its support and said, “It has been a great run of artistic venture and sharing with this community in many, many ways, both my 35 years in business and 45 years in Grand Marais and Cook County.”
