Pick up a 2010 Travel Map and plan a visit to the Minnesota Historical Society’s 26 historic sites and museums, where there’s something for all ages and interests – tours, activities, crafts and performances.
This year, visitors can help celebrate the 100th anniversary of Split Rock Lighthouse. Daily tours are available and special programs and beacon lightings are offered on the first Friday of each month, May through November.
At the Forest History Center in Grand Rapids, check out a GPS and try the new GeoTrack program. At Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post in Onamia, explore a life-size diorama in the Four Seasons Room, then visit the trading post for unique Ojibwemade gifts. At the Charles A. Lindbergh Historic Site in Little Falls, explore the famous aviator’s boyhood home and sit in a replica of the Spirit of St. Louis cockpit in the Visitor Center.
View world-renowned American Indian carvings at Jeffers Petroglyphs in Morton, explore life in a small town circa 1899 at Historic Forestville or learn about the fur trade at the North West Company Fur Post, Pine City.
In the metro area, guests can visit Mill City Museum to take a ride on the eight-story Flour Tower elevator, view the award-winning film “Minneapolis in 19 Minutes Flat” and enter the Baking Lab for free smells and tastes.
Go on a tour of the Minnesota State Capitol, join guides from the James J. Hill House for a stroll down St. Paul’s historic Summit Avenue and get up close with the sheep, pigs and chickens at the Oliver H. Kelley Farm in Elk River. At Historic Fort Snelling, delight in the firing of the cannons and explore the restored barracks, hospital and commandant’s house.
New this year is the Minnesota History Pass, good for unlimited admissions for three consecutive days. The pass is available at any of the Society’s historic sites and museums. Cost is $20 per adult or $10 per child, age 6 to 17. If you like what you see, then consider becoming a member. The cost of the pass can be applied toward membership.
