The Cook County High School Band had another outstanding performance at the State Music Competition in Virginia on April 30. Juggling a track meet and a playhouse performance that were all scheduled the same day as the competition, the band nonetheless outdid itself, lending their talents to the pieces Into the
Raging River
by Steven Reineke and Rumble on the High Plains
by Michael Sweeney.
Under the direction of Bill Tormondsen, the band earned Superior ratings from all three judges, who awarded scores of 39, 40, and 40 out of 40 points possible. The points were awarded for factors such as musicianship, tone quality, and music interpretation.
The large group of Cook County ensembles and solos did an excellent job as well. The clarinet trio of Will Brandenburg, Alec Muhich, and Luke Fenwick earned an Excellent rating, as did the clarinet quartet of Sarissa Falk, Lexie Palmer, Rachel Wieben, and Mara MacDonell.
Earning Superior ratings for their ensembles were the flute trio of Ailee Larson, Katrina Axtell, and Molly Rider, the French horn trio of Karlee Axtell, Ben Seaton, and Colin Everson, and the saxophone quartet of Karl Ingebrigtsen, Bekah Laky, Adriana Berglund, and Jordyn Kirk.
Every single Cook County solo performer earned a Superior rating as well, including Will Brandenburg’s clarinet solo, Haley Ruhanen’s tuba solo, and Katrina Axtell’s and Ailee Larson’s flute solos.
The band would like to extend special thanks to Stacey Hawkins, who provided piano accompaniment for the solos.
Cook County’s outstanding solo and ensemble artists performed Thursday evening, May 13 at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
