On Friday, August 3 Pete Stauber made a whirlwind pass through Cook County. This was his third visit in a long year of campaigning to become the 8th District’s next congressional representative in Washington.
Here’s a thumbnail sketch of Pete Stauber’s views on today’s hottest topics.
On mining, he responded, “I support mining which employs scientifically based methods to ensure that our environment remains pristine.”
When asked about his stance on immigration, indeed a hot-button topic, Pete answered, “As a retired law enforcement officer, I believe we need to abide by the laws that are put in place. I support all legal immigrants who come here and wish to live the American dream.”
The president’s tax reform bill received big thumbs up from Stauber. “I support the ongoing efforts to reform our tax code which will put more money into the pockets of families.”
Abortion received big thumbs down. “I support life from conception to natural death and will always be a strong and constant voice for the right to life.”
Healthcare concerns all Americans. Stauber opposes a government run single–payer system but instead favors choice. “Healthcare should be between a patient and his/her doctor. I support high quality, affordable and accessible health care which is patient driven and puts individuals in charge of their health care rather than the government.”
When asked about the Second Amendment he replied, “I am committed to protecting the Second Amendment, which guarantees the right of a law-abiding individual to keep and bear arms. I will fight any attempts to weaken the constitutional amendment.”
Veterans have often been forgotten and often underserved. Many are homeless, and the suicide rate for veterans is far higher than for the rest of the population. Stauber wants this treatment—or lack of treatment—to end.
“I believe we have no higher commitment than to take care of our active duty military, their families and our veterans.”
Opioids are ravaging the country. As a police officer Stauber had to visit a home and inform parents their child had died from a drug overdose, one of the hardest things an officer has to do. “We need strong borders to keep the drugs out of the country, and we need to be tough on the people dealing drugs.”
Pete is currently in his second term as a St. Louis County commissioner. He has a long litany of service to nonprofit boards and committees. His wife, Jodi, is a retired Iraq War Veteran and the first female command chief in the history of the 146th Fighter Wing. Together the couple has four children. Pete is also a retired professional hockey player and he and his brothers own Duluth Hockey, so he knows what it’s like to make payroll and go through lean times in a small business.
So why is he running for Congress in a district where it is extremely hard for a Republican to win?
“I have a passion for service to my community and my country,” he said. “If elected to Congress, I will fight for what is best for the 8th District and what is best for our country.”
