State moves high school football and volleyball to spring

There won’t be any high school football games or volleyball games to attend this year.

While those two sports won’t be allowed this fall, the Minnesota State High School League cleared cross country, girls’ tennis, girls’ swimming, as well as soccer, to be played with limitations.

Football and volleyball are slated to start 2021 in March with competition ending mid-May.

While volleyball won’t be affected by the weather because it is played indoors, football might be at a disadvantage here in the Northland because there is often a good bit of snow on the ground at that time. This might be a competitive disadvantage to northland schools versus southern Minnesota schools that should have clear fields to practice on when the new spring season starts.

Nevertheless, seniors will get a chance to play football and volleyball, which was the hope for all players and sports fans.

Minnesota joins with 31 other states that have moved or delayed fall sports due to the COVID- 19 pandemic.
