World Champion Girls’ U10 winner Lucy Shaw won her division in the Fisherman’s Picnic logrolling contest, but it wasn’t easy. Lucy had to roll against Alicia Diethert of Somerset, Wis. in the final and she had to work hard to defend her state championship title. Paige Everson of the North Shore Rollers finished third in the contest.

Lucy also won the speed birling contest and finished third in the boom running competition held the next day at Jenny and Niel Atkinson’s place on Clearwater Lake.

The Fisherman’s Picnic contest also serves as the Minnesota State Logrolling/Speed Birling and Boom Running Championship.

Wellesley Howard-Larsen defeated fellow North Shore Rollers teammate Tarin Hansen to win the Girls’ U13 state championship. Dominik Wilson defeated Luke Johnson in the Boys’ U10 Division with Zach Stipehalt completing the top three spots for the North Shore Rollers. Wilson also placed third in the speed birling.

Eight-time logrollingW orld Champion Jenny Atkinson spent much of the Fisherman’s Picnic weekend teaching kids and adults the basics of logrolling. Here Jenny gives a lesson to PFC Kayla Johnson, one of the National Guard workers who were on hand manning the climbing wall and National Guard tent.

Crowd favorite and local log rolling prodigy Jessica Berg- Collman had to miss all of the competitions due to an emergency appendectomy. Jessica placed third in the World Championships for the Girls’ U16 Division in Hayward two weeks ago, and the week before that she placed first against the semi-pros in her first attempt at moving up against more formidable athletes.
