Three local skaters helped the ‘96 Lake Superior Stars take home the Duluth Ice Cup Tournament championship trophy on Sunday, August 8. After posting a 2-0-1 record in round-robin play, the Stars entered the championship game as a clear underdog to Minnesota Legacy, who had embarrassed them 13-1 in a tournament game last May.
The Stars hit the ice determined to skate away with the trophy. Goaltender Alex Murray of Grand Marais held Minnesota Legacy scoreless through two periods before finally being beaten on a deflection in front of the net.
Down by a goal, Lucas Small of Silver Bay scored twice and Kyle McKinzie of Two Harbors scored once in a furious rally to take the lead. A second Legacy tally made the final score 3-2. Alex Murray stopped 32 of 34 shots to get the win in goal.
It was the final game for the ‘96 Stars who are made up of skaters from Minnesota, Ontario and Wisconsin.
