As Bryan Hansel explains, “This was a row of 60 satellites. They were close together, and it took about 10-15 minutes for all of them to pass.”

While they won’t be as bright as they were when Bryan Hansel took this photo, they will fly over Grand Marais again in the next couple of days. They will appear in the west and exit in the east. Look for them on Saturday: 4:59 a.m. to 5:11 a.m.; Sunday: 3:42 to 3:56 a.m. and 5:17 to 5:31 a.m. and Monday: 4:02 to 4:15 a.m. and 5:37 to 5:51 a.m.

What is Starlink?

Elon Musk, through his company SpaceX is building a low latency, broadband internet system to meet the needs of consumers across the world. SpaceX is producing thousands of these low Earth orbit satellites which will work in tandem with ground transceivers. Right now, the cost is $99 per month to get this service where it is being offered. That, plus a one-time cost of $499 for an antenna and router. The downside of this program is that if Musk is able to launch all 42,000 of these satellites, they will clutter the night sky and cause problems for earth-based astronomers.
