Stanley “Bud” Nelson passed away June 17, 2012, leaving behind a legacy not many will ever forget.
He was born Nov. 18, 1934 to the late Carl James Nelson and Violet Merie Brethauer. Bud proudly served his country as a paratrooper mechanic in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and later served as an integral part of the building of many local bridges.
He was employed by the construction company Roy LaBounty. He was a member of the 49ers and a dedicated iron worker. Bud’s work ethic was manifested further when he started Nelson Auto Parts & Towing in Tofte in 1957. The business quickly became a well-known and ever-important service not only to locals of the area but to all tourists who needed a car fixed or a tow, even in the middle of the night.
After many wonderful years with Nelson Auto Parts & Towing, he sold the business in Tofte in 2005 and moved to Grand Marais, where he operated Windigo Lodge on the Gunflint Trail with his wife Charlotte Nelson, deciding to continue his service as Bud’s Towing &
Plowing.
Bud’s reputation for hard work reached near and far, his dedication to his family and to service only pausing in January 2012. Faced with illness in recent years, Bud remained headstrong and determined. Quietly passing away on a Sunday morning, his life was anything but quiet.
He is survived by his wife Charlotte Nelson; sister Carol Tuorila (Kenny) of Silver Bay; beloved children Cyndi, Mike, Jim, Randy and Laura, and their spouses; stepchildren Rita, Robin, Randy, Victoria, Craig and Vincent and their spouses; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will miss him and remember him through memories and stories.
Bud was many things to many people and will not be forgotten. May his legacy, reputation and dedication to the American dream be carried on in all who knew and loved him. Bud was a legend in his own time.
Services were held June 23 at Windigo Lodge.
