St. Louis County confirms that shooting suspect died at Essentia – St. Mary’s Hospital




 On December 27, 2011 at 8 a.m., Daniel Sidney Schlienz, 42, died at Essentia/St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, according to St, Louis County Undersheriff D.W. Phillips.

Schlienz had been in custody at the St. Louis County Jail since December 16 and had been arraigned for criminal charges in conjunction with a shooting at the Cook County Courthouse on December 15, 2011.

While in jail on December 26, Schlienz showed signs of medical distress. Jail staff called 911 at 7:49 p.m. and Gold Cross Ambulance transported him to Essentia – St. Mary’s Hospital for medical care. Schlienz died while in the hospital at approximately 8 a.m. on December 27 with family members present.

This incident is under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

The St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy this afternoon. Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Tom Uncini has ruled the cause and manner of death as "undetermined" at this time pending additional lab tests which will take several weeks to complete. 

In an update released at 4:30 p.m. , Undersheriff D. W. Phillips said no foul play is suspected in Schlienz’s death.
