In their second, tournament of the 2011-12 Squirt Hockey season, the Silver Bay/Cook County (SB/ CC) Squirts headed to Two Harbors for an eight-team event January 14 -15. The Squirts were 9-1 going into this tournament and would be facing Two Harbors White, the only team to defeat the SB/CC Squirts this year. The coaches and parents hoped to see some great hockey and the teams did not disappoint.
In their first game of the tournament, the Squirts played a tough Superior Blue team. In a very tight, competitive hockey game, the teams were tied at 2 going into overtime. Little did we know that would be the first of three overtime games on this weekend! Silver Bay/Cook County came out on top of this one with a 3-2 victory. Then, as expected, the Squirts were matched up with Two Harbors White and again this game went into overtime with the teams tied at 1 after three periods. The SB/ CC Squirts came out again on top with another overtime win and a score of 2-1.
The stage was set for the championship game with SB/CC facing off against Two Harbors Maroon. While the Squirts had seen this team earlier in the season (an 11-1 victory for SB/CC), it was soon apparent that this Two Harbors Maroon team was drastically improved and that this would be a battle to the end.
As with the previous two games, this championship game was tied at 2 at the end of three periods. As if this wasn’t exciting enough, the game remained tied at 2 after a 5-minute overtime!
With coaches and parents on the edges of their seats, it was time for a shootout. With Cook County goalie Cameron Roy in goal, the shootout began. Two Harbors took the first shot and a huge save was made by the SB/CC goaltender!
It was now SB/CC’s turn at the Two Harbors goalie and Ethan Sporn did not disappoint. With a quick approach and beautiful shot, Ethan scored on the Two Harbors goaltender. The score was now 3-2.
In a shootout each team gets three shots, and as Two Harbors sent their second shooter in on the SB/ CC goalie, yet another big save was made!
SB/CC now had the chance to put the game away and when their second shooter, Ryder McMillen, skated down for the shot, he nailed the upper corner for the goal. It was truly a game for the ages and the SB/CC Squirts were beyond thrilled with their first-place finish in Two Harbors.
This team is coached by Mike Rowlee, Jody Reineccius, Dusty McMillen and Jim Roy.
