Springing into spring at the Care Center

We have seen many changes here at the Care Center this winter with the ongoing construction project, and the residents are experiencing spring fever more than usual. Not only will we be getting outdoors more as the days warm up, but the residents will soon be able to tour the first new wing of the Care Center which is scheduled to be ready for occupancy sometime in late May. We are looking forward to that!

April 10-16 marks National Volunteer Week, a time to recognize the efforts of volunteers at the local, state, and national levels. The residents and staff wish to thank our dedicated volunteers for all the extraordinary things they do all year. A special Volunteer Brunch will be held in May to honor our many volunteers here at the Care Center. This month we extend a special thank you to Howard McKenzie, one of our volunteers, for his efforts to get us our new bingo set.

Elfvin Bakery will be here on April 11 at 1:30 p.m. to demonstrate making soft pretzels. We look forward to this unique opportunity, especially since April is National Soft Pretzel Month!

National Volunteer month is celebrated in April. The Care Center appreciates all the volunteers who brighten the days for Care Center residents. Residents also like to volunteer when they can. They were very busy filling Easter eggs for the Community Easter Egg hunt. They filled a grand total of 3,572 eggs! (L-R) Helen Ford, Betty Larsen, Joyce Hagen, Donna Willett, Bob Heideman, Bernice LeGarde, Marce Wood and Ethel Leng.

Ethel Leng will be celebrating her 100th birthday on April 12. Friends and family are invited to a social with cake and ice cream at 3 p.m. that day to honor Ethel on her milestone birthday. Trudy Boyd and Phyllis Noyes will also be celebrating birthdays this month. Phyllis will turn 101 on April 30. The monthly birthday party will be held on Wednesday, April 13 at 3 p.m. Cake and ice cream will be served along with classic piano music by Doug Sanders.

The Grand Marais Lioness Club will host their monthly social for residents on Saturday, April 16 at 3 p.m. with a special dessert, and Irene Thompson performing everyone’s favorite tunes on the piano.

There are two outings scheduled for April. On April 14, we are planning a shopping trip and a visit to the Blue Water Café. On April 28, we will be going to the Senior Center for lunch and visiting.

We have some fun music events scheduled in April. Members of the group Lake Effect will hold a concert at the Care Center on April 15 at 5:30, and the Flute Reed Ramblers will be back on April 19 at 3 p.m. with their old time country and gospel classics.
