n This spring the Cook County tennis courts were tbusy, with 65+ boys and girls, ages 5 – 16, participating in the 5-week 2011 USTA Jr. Team Tennis program, which matches players of similar age and ability. Kids practiced and competed in four divisions— d QuickStart Tennis for ages 8 and under; dQuickStart Tennis for ages 10 and under; the Stars hDivision for ages 11 and under; and the Stars & Stripes
Division for ages 18 and under. n There were 52 junior players in the fast and easyto learn QuickStart Division and 13-plus participated in the Stars & Stripes division.
More than 1,000 tennis sites, including Grand Marais, have begun implementing h the QuickStart Tennis format into their
10-and-under programming and the USTA has made this format an integral part of its nco-ed recreation Jr. Team Tennis league and tournaments. The three new public tennis courts in Grand Marais have narrow
QuickStart Tennis lines painted on them, in a light blue color.
Each division met twice a week for instruction and game-type activities and drills. The main tennis instructors were John Muus, Paul Muus, Scott
Bergstrom, and Tim Scannell and some of the varsity boy players volunteered their services on Wednesdays to help out with the 10 & Under
QuickStart Tennis Division. All of the junior players received t-shirts for participating in the program.
Coming up next is the summer
National Junior Tennis League program, which begins June 21.
