Ghosts or goblins, witches or werewolves, zombies or mummies, something mysterious caused the power outage that affected much of Cook County and Lake County on Halloween night.
In the wincing cold pinched witching hour, around 8 p.m., lights quivered, flickered, and “poof ” disappeared into the frothy frigid night like a frightened wraith chased by hordes of hades howling hounds.
Underneath the streetlights, now devoid of light, on sidewalks or driveways leading to houses now black as Satan’s heart, stunned trick-or-treaters shivered, shook and wondered what dark magic caused the drama.
And some cried out for their mama!
When contacted, Amy Rutledge, manager, corporate communications for Minnesota Power, said the cause of the outage remains a mystery.
Rutledge responded to the Cook County New- Herald’s inquiry and answered, “As you mentioned, we did have a brief outage that lasted about 15-20 minutes on Halloween night. It affected about 1,100 customers, mainly the city of Silver Bay and NorthShore Mining.
“We take reliability very seriously for our residential and large industrial customers. A ground inspection did not identify a specific cause; we do plan to also conduct an aerial inspection to help determine a cause which will assist us in ensuring the prevention of future outages.”
Until we learn more from Minnesota Power, we can only imagine it was an aberration or specter toying with the lights on a cold, dark, spooky Halloween night, one filled with small scary ghosts and goblins carrying baskets and bags of sweet treats and candy.
