Split Rock Lighthouse marks centennial this year

Split Rock Lighthouse is celebrating its 100th birthday in 2010 with special events and activities planned throughout the year.

“Split Rock Lighthouse is one of Minnesota’s signature places and one of the most exciting historical destinations in the state,” said Nina Archabal, director of the Minnesota Historical Society. “It is a crown jewel of the Society’s historic sites program.”

To mark the occasion, Ed Maki will present first-person programs throughout the summer in the character of Orren “Pete” Young, the first headkeeper of the lighthouse. Maki will add color and stories of 1910 to the site’s interpretive programs. Themuseum store will also feature centennial-themed merchandise.

The historic buildings are closed for the winter, but the visitor center and museum store are open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Monday.

Call or visit the historic site’s website for information and updates throughout the year. The number is (218)226-6372; the website is www.mnhs.org/splitrock.
