I greatly enjoy reading the Spiritual Reflections
columns of your newspaper—especially those written by Rev. Peter Monkres. I could read or listen to Rev. Monkres’ words for hours and become a more enlightened human because of it.
That said, I was wondering, considering the local and global diversity of beliefs, if any spiritual insights beyond Christianity might one day get representation in this column.
Traditional American Indian lore has a lot to say about (badly-needed!) respect for our living planet. Buddhism has an enviable track record of providing spiritual nourishment and fulfillment. Atheists also experience compassion, live by healthy moral standards, and exude real happiness and genuine goodwill.
These groups too, and perhaps others, exist and thrive in Cook County and contribute their share to its quality of life. A modicum of representation of these people in the Spiritual Reflections
columns would provide fairness and balance to all your readers. If one’s belief, religious, spiritual, or otherwise, is valid, then exploring other beliefs, even those contradictory to one’s own, can only serve to validate that belief.
Am I the only News-Herald
reader who would welcome a greater diversity of spiritual insight in the Spiritual Reflections
column?
