Spice Lake Fire largely contained

On Tuesday, June 20 thirteen firefighters were busy mopping up hot spots left by the 22-acre Spice Lake fire that started in the BWCA.

The Spice Lake wildfire was detected on June 13th between Spice Lake and Ogishkemuncie Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) on the Gunflint Ranger District of the Superior National Forest. The fire was approximately 10 miles west of the Gunflint Trail.

The Superior National Forest implemented Forest Order (09-09-23-03) for closure of area lakes, portage, and trails around the fire for public safety. Public safety crews are redirecting visitors and posting portages closed. Additionally, due to the dry conditions and very high wildfire danger campfire burning restrictions have been put in place until further notice.

No businesses along the Gunflint Trail closed due to the fire. The Gunflint Trail has variety of BWCAW outfitters, cooperators, lodges, restaurants and other amenities for visitors and the local community and all are open for business.

If you have current reservations for the BWCAW, please contact your guide/ cooperator with any questions.
