A wildfire was spotted ten miles west of the Gunflint Trail in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) late June 13.
The fire is near Spice Lake and Ogishkemuncie Lake in the BWCAW in the Gunflint Ranger District
of the Superior National Forest.
Forest Service fire personnel flew over the fire to determine the fire’s activity and location. Moderate fire activity was seen in a mixed Boreal Forest of aspen, pine, and balsam fir. Some evidence showed that Spruce Budworm had affected trees, meaning dead and downed trees can fuel an active fire.
Fire personnel searched for and found public canoe groups on area lakes, made contact with several groups on Ogishkemuncie Lake, and directed them off the lake to the east.
The fire will be monitored, and a fire suppression plan will be developed along with a public safety plan to ensure visitors remain safe.
