“Special Refunds” available for some property owners

Thank you for publishing “Good News-Bad News,” eight low income families, who do not have to file federal or Minnesota tax returns responded and will receive property tax refunds this fall.

There is another family group who is also missing out on the special property tax refunds available which happens about once every five years when their property taxes are raised by more than $100 or 12 percent.

These families can be characterized as two working parents with children, who either do their own tax returns, or pay others to file their returns. With incomes over $108,660 they are not eligible for the yearly Homestead Property Tax refund. But regardless of their income they can file and receive the special refund.

For example with $108,000 income, a property tax increase of $766 results in a special refund of $700.

The Cook County Tax Aide Volunteers do special refunds for all who are eligible, and continue to help the elderly and low income members of our community with the their federal, state, property, and rent refunds.

Please do nor miss out on your refunds – our service is confidential and free.

Just call Steve (370-2184) or Chuck (475-2776) or Diane (387- 3015).
