Speak up now to stop rumble strips

Many of you fortunate enough to live west of Grand Marais on Highway 61 have probably not yet witnessed the noise pollution intrusion to our environment east of town and on up the before peaceful Highway 61 to Grand Portage.

If you missed Jerry Hiniker’s letter in the Aug. 10 edition of the News-Herald, his description requires no additions. He described it perfectly.

My neighbors and I met with a MnDOT official this week. We are attempting to persuade them to change how they implement their so-called safety program. We hope others call MnDOT and register their opinions on the noise pollution of this absurd practice.

But here is the part that will straighten some in their chairs. It’s only a matter of time before MnDOT adds rumble strips all the way from Duluth to the border. We will soon likely not be the lone voice of protest.

Is this really how we want the North Shore to sound? Blaaaat! Homeowners, businesses, bike riders, hikers etc. within three to four miles of Highway 61 will never again have to wait long to hear the loud annoying and frequently intruding blaaaat! of the rumble strip.

For safety. We are told. After the fact.

If you have an opinion, I encourage you to contact MnDOT at 1123 Mesabi Ave. in Duluth and anyone else you think could influence this blunder. Wonder if it’s too early to contact elected officials for help?
