The Viking Alpine girls’ ski team had a commanding performance at Giants Ridge last week, taking first place overall in a 10-team field. Molly Rider and Signe Larson led the Vikings and had race results identical to the first race of the year, again taking second and fifth place, respectively.

Ali Boettcher and Katie Smedstad—two Silver Bay team participants—followed with a 14th place and 17th place finish, allowing these four to combine for an overall team first-place finish.

“We got a good look at our regional competition at Giants Ridge and today’s race shows our girls have depth and the ability to compete at a high level within our region,” said head coach Jim Vick.

The girls’ team followed with Rose Ingebrigtsen (28th), Megan Lehto (30th) and Kristina Andelove (36th). Amber Todd had a minor racecourse miscue, which resulted in a no-score (time).

Anders Zimmer led the Viking boys’ team with a thirdplace overall finish in a field of 65 racers. Anders was followed by teammates Karl Ingebrigtsen (12th), Luke Fenwick (24th) and Collin Berglund (35th) rounding out the top four team places and a sixth-place team finish. Collin had a stellar first run only to be tripped up near the finish line. And even with the course miscue, Collin’s combined time still allowed him to finish near the top half of all racers.

“When I can have four top racers like Anders, Karl, Luke and Collin all stand and all have two solid runs, the boys will be tough. And when I can have solid back-up by Kyle Martinson, Dexter Yoki, Clay Gruber- Schultz and Joe Borud—we will have depth,” said Assistant Coach Jim Elverhoy.

“The boys team is getting there and as we advance deeper into the season I will expect to see more consistency in their race development,” said Elverhoy.

The team will continue to train over the holiday season break, anxiously waiting to get back to the race circuit starting with a January 7 race at Giants Ridge.
