Cook SWCD is a local government unit established under state law and governed by an elected, five-member board. It manages and directs natural resource management programs at the local level. Cook SWCD does not have regulatory or enforcement authority. Instead, it works with private and public landowners who wish to initiate conservation, protection, and restoration projects on their land. Its mission is to “maintain soil and water quality in Cook County by fostering responsible land use and by controlling soil erosion and non-point pollution.”
Supervisors provide local and regional leadership and make decisions affecting watersheds, lakes, wetlands, soil, and forests. The Board also provides educational, technical, and financial assistance to local land users. Supervisors receive meeting per diems and mileage reimbursements.
