The Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District is now holding its annual spring conservation sale of native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. Native plant roots serve to stabilize soil and prevent erosion from storm water runoff. They also filter and cleanse water running through soil to the ground water below. Trees can increase the value of your property and conserve energy by shading your house in the summer and sheltering it from cold winds in the winter.
If you are concerned with planting trees while still following Firewise guidelines, call Cheryl Walimaa in the auditor’s office at (218) 387-3640, extension 142.
Some of the species available include white pine, red pine, white cedar, Juneberry, mountain ash, Canada wild rye, goldenrod, and black-eyed Susan. Order forms and more information can be found at the Conservation District office in the Cook County courthouse, or on the website at www.co.cook.mn.us/index. php/tree-a-shrub-sale. For more information, call Kerrie Fabius at (218) 387-3649.
Orders are due by April 15; pick-up will be May 13 at the courthouse.
