Soil and Water supervisor election features three incumbents

In a little over a week, voters in Cook County will head to the polls to elect supervisors for the Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD).

Positions on this year’s ballot include those representing nomination districts 2, 4 and 5. District 2 includes the Lutsen Area and the townships above, and is currently represented by James Hall. District 4 includes the Maple Hill area and the townships above, and is represented by David Berglund. District 5, represented by Roger Haertel, includes the Hovland area. All three incumbents are running unopposed.

The SWCD board of supervisors plays an important role in addressing a wide variety of resource management issues aimed at protecting and improving water quality, properly managing wetlands and preventing soil erosion. Our SWCD employees work with landowners and other units of government, in both rural and urban settings, to provide financial and technical assistance for these efforts.

SWCDs are local units of government, and supervisors are elected to four-year terms. Supervisor terms are staggered so either two or three supervisors are up for election each two years. Monthly business meetings are held and supervisors also attend various conferences throughout the year.
