Softball wins one, drops two



On Thursday, May 16 the Cook County Vikings girls’ fast-pitch softball team dug deep and took a 4-2 win over the North Woods Grizzlies.

The Vikings led 1-0 after the first inning with North Woods tying it up in the third. In the fifth inning, the Vikings scored three runs. Charlet Waver banged out a single on a 1-2 count to bring in the go-ahead run.

North Woods brought one run across the plate in the seventh inning, but the Vikings held on to win 4-2.

A wild pitch by North Woods pitcher Alanna Rutchasky allowed the Vikings to score the first run of the game. Rutchasky lasted two and a third innings, striking out six while allowing one run off of two hits and one walk before being replaced by Taylor Vagel.

Meanwhile, Abbie Crawford had a great day on the mound for her team. Abbie struck out nine Grizzlies while allowing three hits and two runs over seven innings.

Alyssa Spry and Charlet Waver each had two hits to lead the varsity. Katie Peck singled in a run and scored a run while Katie Carpenter and Abbie Crawford also got one hit each for the Vikings.

Vikings fall to Carlton

On Friday, May 17 the Vikings traveled to Carlton to face the always tough Bulldogs and fell 17-6 in a game that saw a lot of offense by both teams.

Carlton led 1-0 after one, but the Bulldogs exploded for nine runs in the second.

Still, the Vikings came back to score four runs in the top of the third. Abbie Crawford went deep on the first pitch she saw, scoring two runs on her home run. Next Emmalli Myers smacked a double on a 2-1 pitch count to add two more runs to the Vikings’ total.

Carlton, however, came back in the bottom of the third to score four runs of their own.

Abbie Mickle took the win for the Bulldogs. Mickle pitched two and a third innings. She allowed six runs off of seven hits while striking out two and not walking a batter.

Emma Smith took the loss for the Vikings. Emma pitched two innings, allowing 10 runs off of five hits and striking out one. Abbie Crawford relieved, striking out two.

Katie Peck, just an eighth-grader, was 3-3 at the plate. Amy Carpenter, a ninth-grader, recorded two hits in the game.

Collecting one hit each was Alyssa Spry, Emma Smith, and Emmalli Myers.

Vikings fall to Mariners

After a scoreless first inning, Silver Bay struck in the second, putting two runs on the scoreboard.

The Vikings came right back, pushing three runs across the plate to take a momentary lead. The Mariners, however, scored one run in the third, and the game was knotted at 3-3.

The Mariners tacked on one more run in the fourth but blew the game open in the fifth and last inning with nine runs to take a 13-5 victory.

The game was played in Silver Bay on Tuesday, May 21.

Silver Bay’s Danika Thompson struck out six and gave up two runs to take the win on the mound.

Abbie Crawford took the loss for the Vikings. Abbie pitched four and a third innings allowing eight hits and 13 runs while striking out two.

In the third inning, Charlet Waver singled and drove in a run. Katie Peck also singled and drove in a run and a ground-out by Alyssa Spry drove in the last of the Vikings’ three runs.

Abbie Crawford was 2-2 at the plate, smacking one for a double.

Kalina Dimitrova, Emma Smith, and Katie Carpenter also recorded one hit each in the game.

The Vikings are now 4-10 on the season.
