The Vikings girls’ fast pitch softball team traveled to South Ridge High School on Thursday, May 4 to face the South Ridge Panthers in a Polar League Conference game.

Falling behind early, their offense lagging, the Vikings lost in four innings 15-0.

“We could not quite get anything going on the offensive side,” said head coach Peter Lucken.

A bright spot on offense was Hannah Toftey who went 2 for 2 at the plate to lead the Vikings.

“The thing that got us today was errors,” Coach Lucken said. “We had six of them and South Ridge capitalized.”

Despite the loss his freshman pitcher, Abbie Crawford, encouraged Lucken. “Abbie definitely came back and gave us a good start which was fantastic to see,” Lucken said. “The thing we have to do is keep our heads up and keep playing the game. Eventually we will put ourselves in a position to win. We just have to keep going.”

The Lady Vikings picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, May 6, against Ely in a low scoring game that was decided by the defense.

Abby Prom was the starting pitcher for the Vikings and pitched the best game of the season so far. Ely threatened every inning but was unable to get anything going. The Timberwolves scored two runs in the top of the third with a couple of walks and two timely hits. That did not keep the Vikings down for long however, as they came back with three in the bottom of that inning. Good defense and good pitching kept the Timberwolves off the board and the Vikings held on to win 3-2.

“We definitely played our best game of the season on Saturday,” said head coach Peter Lucken. “Abby Prom pitched just amazing. She had a few walks but she was able to spread them out and she came up with some very timely strikeouts. Our hitting was decent, but the area we shined was with our pitching and fielding,” Lucken said.
