The Cook County girls’ softball team traveled to Silver Bay on Thursday, April 21 to take on the Silver Bay Mariners in a game that came down to the wire, with Silver Bay winning 10-9.
After one inning the Vikings led 2-1. In the second inning the Vikings scored 5 runs off of the bats of Christina Rude and Anna Carmen. Both girls went 2-4 in the game. All in all four girls hit doubles. Theresa Morrin and Alexis Eliasen also took second base on long hits.
Both the Vikings and the Mariners scored 2 more runs in the third inning, and the Vikes went into the fourth inning up 9-3.
Neither team scored in the fourth but Silver Bay rallied for 4 runs in the fifth inning and added 3 more runs in the sixth inning to go up 10-9. The Vikings couldn’t score in the tenth and the game was over.
“Once it (the game) started getting tight, we started playing scared and let it slip away,” said head coach Jessie Anderson.
It was a tough loss for her squad. “We haven’t beaten Silver Bay in years. They’re always tough. We really wanted this one.”
But, noted Anderson, her team played hard and played great.
“Everybody hit the ball well and executed well. We only had two errors but they were critical. One was a mental error with the bases loaded. One was a throwing error to the wrong base and we had two base running errors. Really, though, overall we played well, but you can’t give Silver Bay an inch. Give them credit, they clawed their way back into the game,” said Anderson.
Aside from the play on the field there was also some action from the Silver Bay bench and fans, said Anderson. “They were arguing balls and strikes. Their fans, players in the dugout were arguing umpire calls. Their head coach finally got kicked out of the game for disputing calls. It got pretty wild.”
Vikings beat Cromwell
Cromwell came to play softball last Tuesday, April 26, but really, in the end, they sought solace and sympathy from their suffering caused by the cold, wind and constant rain. All of which Mother Nature supplied in great quantity.
Softball wasn’t on Cromwell’s minds. “Even in warm-ups our girls heard their players saying they didn’t want to play the game, but we decided to get on with it because Cromwell had traveled a long way. So we played in the awful weather,” said head coach Jessie Anderson.
“We were all soaked to the bone. There were a lot of walks, a lot of passed balls and throwing errors on both sides. Some girls couldn’t get hitting gloves on because their hands were swollen from the cold. Most of the runs were scored from passed balls or wild pitches. The difference in the game was that our girls stayed up, stayed positive. The whole team deserves kudos for their attitude. There weren’t a lot of hits in the game, but we ended up winning 15-9. Our girls won a game they could have lost, but they hung in there and won with attitude more than anything else,” said Anderson.
For the record, it snowed several inches that night, and the game scheduled the next day against Esko was cancelled because the field was covered in snow.
