The season ended for the Cook County Viking softball team with their Section 7A loss to the Silver Bay Mariners on Tuesday, May 24. The game was a rubber match between the North Shore rivals as each team split wins during the season. Leading up to the playoffs were games played against the Mariners and Two Harbors Agates. Vikings fall to Mariners
The softball team hosted the Silver Bay Mariners on Thursday, May 19 and fell 15-4 in four innings. Errors really hurt the Vikings on this night as they had quite a few missed balls in the field.
This was a reversal of the last time the two teams met when the Vikings took a 13-10 win over the Mariners on May 9 in a game played in Silver Bay.
Trace McQuatters led Viking hitters by going 3-3 with 3 RBIs. Maddie Roy was 2-2 at the plate and Mariah Deschampe was 2-3 with a double.
The Mariners’ Cora Carter got the win from the mound with 9 strikeouts in four innings and the Mariners’ Brooke McMillen was 3-4 with a home run.
Agates get by Vikings
This was close throughout but the Vikings fell just short, losing 9-7 to the Two Harbors Agates in a seven inning game played at home on Friday, May 20.
The Agates scored three runs in the first inning, one in the third, two in the fifth and one in the sixth while the Vikings stayed close on their heels with two runs coming in the first, one in the second, one in the third, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Trace McQuatters again had a hot bat and went 2-4 from the plate while Maddy Roy was 2-4. Maranda Deschampe was 1-3. Mariah Deschampe was 1-3. Alex Slanga 1-3 and Hanna Borson ended her night by going 1-3.
Vikings bow out of playoffs
One bad late inning cost the Vikings a chance to advance in the Section 7A playoffs as the Vikings fell 10-4 to their North Shore nemesis the Silver Bay Mariners on May 24.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mariners rallied to score five runs and take a 10-4 lead into the seventh inning. No team scored in the last inning and the Vikings’ season came to an end.
The Vikings traveled to Silver Bay to play the Mariners for the second time in five days. This game was better than the previous contest, but the ending results were the same.
Once again Cora Carter got the win for the Mariners.
Maddy Roy finished with 2-3 from the plate and Mariah Deschampe was also 2-3 with a triple. Jessie Ketola was 3-4 with 2 RBIs for the Mariners.
Head Coach Jessie Anderson loses four seniors from this team. Alex Slanga, the team’s yeomen pitcher; Trace McQuatters, a stalwart outfielder who hit really well the last half of the season; Maddy Roy who was a rock behind the plate as the team’s catcher; and Bethany Derscheid, who played outfield and hustled on every play.
Anderson said she will miss the graduating players and thanked them for their dedication and leadership.
