Maranda Deschampe went 2-for-3 with two doubles and Alex Slanga and Trace McQuatters teamed up to throw a shutout to lead the Vikings to a 10-0 victory over the Floodwood Polar Bears on Friday, April 22.
The Cook County High School girls’ fast pitch softball record went to 2-0 after the Vikings made the long trip to play Floodwood.
Viking Head Coach Jessie Anderson said Slanga pitched four strong innings, striking out five before she put in Trace McQuatters to finish the game.
“They both looked really good,” Anderson said. “Trace ended up with two strikeouts. It’s the first time she has pitched since last year, and last year she only pitched an inning or two for the varsity. It’s important that she get some innings now. Alex looks great but we need more than one pitcher.”
Mariah Deschampe, Maranda’s twin, also had a great day at the plate, going 2-4 with a single and double.
“Both of the Deschampe girls hit the ball really well,” said Anderson.
Hanna Borson was 2-for-3 with two singles, Trace McQuatters was 1-for-3 with a single and Maddy Roy hit for a double in the six-inning game that ended because of the 10 run rule.
“The girls fielded the ball really well. We only had one error in the game,” Coach Anderson said.
“Floodwood has a young team. Their pitcher threw strikes, so we were able to get some hits in the game. They fielded the ball pretty well and overall they played pretty well against us,” Anderson said.
The Vikings played both Two Harbors and McGregor on Thursday, April 28. Both teams should offer more competition than the team has seen this year.
“Overall we look pretty good,” said Anderson. “We are having a few nagging injury problems and are trying to stay healthy. Nothing too major, some muscle strains, mild finger sprains, things we should be able to get through as we go into the busy part of our season.”
