Although the Cook County Viking softball team exceeded expectations when they defeated the Carlton Bulldogs 10-6 in the first round of playoffs, the season still ended earlier than any of them would have liked when they lost to Deer River 11-1 and then Cohasset 12-3.
Both games were played on May 23; the first game at Deer River and then the second game was played at South Ridge High School.
The 10-2 Carlton Bulldogs won the Polar League this spring, with victories over Moose Lake and Esko. The Vikings finished next to last with two wins, and lost 5-1 to Carlton on May 9. With little rest and playing back-to-backto back games in a snow-shortened season, the Vikings ran out of steam in their last two games. A softball wrap-up will be included in next week’s paper.
Boys lose heartbreaker
The CCHS Vikings baseball team gave up 4 runs in the seventh inning against Duluth Marshall and lost 8-7 in the first round of the Section 7A playoffs in a game at Hermantown.
Marshall’s Tyler Pederson singled in Jordan Fralich to seal the win for Marshall.
Thomas Anderson had a double and 3 RBIs and his brother Owen had 2 RBIs for the Vikings.
Joe Borud took the loss on the mound for the Vikings.
Marshall played later that day and defeated Carlton 3-1 to move on in the playoffs.
With the season over, many Viking players will look at playing ball in the summer. The team is young and has a lot of talent coming back.
Look for a baseball wrap-up in next week’s paper.
