So much to do at the Senior Center this fall

The Senior Center provides many meals to the community and our freezer is a vital part of ensuring we are able to do that. Unfortunately we have had many problems with our freezer recently and it finally gave out. This was going to create a hard-ship for the center and possibly affect our plans for revamping the building.

However, Linda Johnson came to the rescue and made the gracious decision to donate money to the center to pay for the freezer.

Linda is a longtime resident of Cook County (a “local”) and a regular at the center. We enjoy the time she spends with us, filling our days with fun stories and never-ending laughter. We would like to extend a sincere Thank You to Linda for her contribution that has allowed us to purchase our new (and much needed!) freezer. Her generosity is absolutely amazing and very appreciated!

Charlie Brown

Seniors, you won’t want to miss traveling to Duluth to watch Charles M. Schulz’s timeless story, A Charlie Brown Christmas, live on stage.

The show features the unforgettable music of Vince Guaraldi, as well as a concert of beloved holiday carols performed by the Peanuts characters. There’s no better way to discover the magic of the season!

The show will be held Sunday, November 18. Cost for tickets starts at $32; transportation is $10 and lunch will be at your own expense. Lunch will be at Grandma’s Saloon & Grill in Canal Park.

For more information or to reserve your spot, call 387-2660. Registration is needed by October 22.

Individual Medicare Counseling

Don’t try and figure out Medicare and all the insurance supplement options available to you by yourself.

Marjori Bottila from Senior Linkage Line will be at the Senior Center on Thursday, October 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and can save you time and money on your Medicare supplemental insurance policies and help you choose the best option for you based on your medical needs and prescriptions.

Call 1-800-333-2433 ext. 81008 to make your appointment with Marjori.

Book Club

The Book Club meets the third Thursday every month from 1-2 p.m. at the Senior Center. This group is open to the public and welcomes everyone. The book for October is

Two Bucks and a Can of Gas by Robert R. Olsen.

In the 1950s, Bob Olsen discovered the North Shore and the Gunflint Trail and this book chronicles a colorful era in the North Woods and the resourceful characters who lived there.

This book is available at the center. The next club meeting is Thursday, October 18.

Foot Care

Foot Care is held every third Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Please arrive no later than 10:30 a.m. First come first served. No appointment necessary. The cost is $10. Please bring a towel and a basin to soak your feet.

Blood pressure and blood sugar checks will be held the first Tuesday of each month starting at 10:30 a.m. Nurses from Sawtooth Mountain Clinic will be at the Senior Center to check your blood pressure and blood sugar. It costs $3 for a blood sugar check, and your blood pressure check is free. Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Cook County Senior Center, courtesy of Programs and Services Coordinator Jes Rodne.
