Snowmobiler flees conservation officer

A Grand Marais man stopped for a routine snowmobile registration check on Saturday, January 5, is facing possible charges of expired registration, driving while intoxicated and fleeing police officer.

Brandon Donek, 22, Grand Marais, was stopped by Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Mary Manning at the north end of the snowmobile trail expressway, on the Lima Grade Road.

After checking the registrations of Donek and the others in his group, Manning found that Donek’s registration had expired. The rest of the party was allowed to go on its way and Manning administered a portable breathalyzer test to Donek who was apparently over the legal limit. As Manning attempted to place him under arrest, Donek took off on his Arctic Cat snowmobile. Manning made a call to the Cook County Sheriff ‘s Office asking for assistance in apprehending him.

Donek later contacted Cook County Law Enforcement himself. No court date has been set at this time, but Manning said charges are pending.
