Snow totals high for May/ Lutsen Mountains extends ski season

It’s no surprise Lutsen Mountains extended their ski season to May 7. There was plenty of snow on the mountains.

This is the latest closing date yet for skiing and snowboarding in recent history, reports the ski hill. Lutsen kept ten to twelve runs open on Eagle Mountain for the end of the year skiing celebration.

But Lutsen Mountains hopes this is a trend that can continue.

“Our goal is to make the first weekend in May each year,” confirms Jim Vick, General Manager of Lutsen Mountains. “We wrapped up last weekend (end of April) with a 3-foot base remaining. With sunshine and 50 degrees forecast for Saturday, it became an easy decision to spin the lift one more day.”

Away from the lake, the snow in Cook County is almost gone. It’s no different across the border. Thunder Bay Newswatch reports that the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority says early May snow depth is the highest ever recorded.

Normally the snow is two to eight centimeters in early May. However, this year on May 2, the snow was measured at 26 and 27 centimeters (10.629 inches) in various locations.

The water content of the snow is also very high. For example, our Thunder Bay neighbors report that the water content is 90 to 327 millimeters (13.2677 inches), while typically, it is five to 30 millimeters.

Thunder Bay also reported 183 mm (7.204 inches) of snow and rain in April, which is 442 percent more than average. It was a long winter, great for skiing but a slow start to gardening, and sunbathing.
