As many Cook County residents know, driving on the North Shore during the icy winter months or busy summer season can be dangerous. Though there are many external dangers we can’t control on the road like ice, deer, and other drivers, there is one that we can – our own behavior. To meet that end developers have put out a handful of road safety apps that aim to focus drivers, slow them down in hazardous road conditions, and minimize distractions. Below are just five of the many available smart phone applications to increase safety during the dangerous winter driving months and beyond.
. Canary
This app is tailored toward the budding teenage motorist’s concerned parents. Canary counts on both the parent and teenager having a smart phone with the app installed. It monitors unsafe activity while driving – like texting or speeding – and alerts the parents.
. Speed Control
Using GPS to determine location, Speed Control can let the driver know the speed limit of the area they are in and give notice of other traffic regulations. Of course, it’s always up to the driver to be aware of his surroundings, but a little reminder doesn’t hurt.
. Sprint DriveFirst
This app detects when a user is the driver and automatically responds to incoming calls or texts to let whoever is trying to reach the driver know that they are unable to respond. By limiting unnecessary communications, this app hopes to focus drivers on the road.
. AT&T Drivemode
With a slight variation to Sprint DriveFirst, this app changes its functionality according to speed. If under 15 MPH, the driver will receive notifications about texts and calls. Speed up over 15 MPH and Drivemode will silence any phone communications, making sure the driver is driving safely.
. Autoline Roadsafe Reward
Maybe a bit too Big Brother for some, this app reports on driving behavior to an enlisted insurance company. The upside? By signing into this app and having the driving reported, drivers can be offered a discount based on the safeness and reliability of their driving habits.
