Documentary filmmakers Patrick Knight and Kelly Schoenfelder earned a prestigious second place in the 2013 Highway 61 Film Festival for their first film Sled Dogs to Saint Paul: The Race for Clean Water.

The 2013 Highway 61 Film Festival was held Oct. 4 and 5 in Pine City, and an entry produced by and featuring local residents took one of the many awards.

Sled Dogs to St. Paul: The Race for Clean Water took second place in the “Documentary Feature” category. Cook County filmmakers Patrick Knight and Kelly Schoenfelder directed the film—the first they have ever done—which tells the story of local dog musher Frank Moe’s trip from Grand Marais to St. Paul during the winter of 2012 to raise awareness about the potential impacts of nonferrous mining projects proposed in northeastern Minnesota.

Moe congratulated the young filmmakers and added that Staci Drouillard was the producer. Stephan Hoglund was the photographer, along with his son, Owen Hoglund.

The Highway 61 Film Festival was established in 2011 as a means of supporting and promoting independent films and filmmakers from all along Highway 61 and beyond. The judges awarded films in a variety of categories, including comedy, drama, student film, animation and documentary.

The judges said they had a challenging time winnowing through all the great films submitted to the 2013 Highway 61 Film Festival. Cash prizes ($50 short/$100 feature) were awarded to all first-place winners; prizes were awarded for all categories in which films were submitted.
